Jailbreak iOS 5 On Apple iDevices Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b5
If your using iOS 5 and can’t live without your jailbreaks then this guide is for you!
Jailbreaks and unlocks seem to come out at almost the same time as the Apple update itself. For those of you upgrading to iOS 5 you don’t have to worry. We have the jailbreak iOS 5 (tethered for now) so you can still add all those tweaks and hacks you love to use.
Due to the upgrades Apple have produces recently people are starting to believe that there is no use for jailbreaks anymore, believing that everything they have will like Cydia tweaks have all had the necessary upgrades anyway. Whilst this is true to some degree, there is still most definitely a bid demand for Jailbreaks because there’s lots of these upgrades that simply wont make it to the market. This is where Jailbreaks come in. One example is SbSettings this takes the control on your Apple devices crucial features using a simple activation method.
Thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team, we have the complete guide to Jailbreak iOS 5 on iDevices along with the release of the follow statement by the team:
“Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet. Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway). The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now). Remember not to accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one! The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).
You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).
Version 0.9.9b5 is available only for Mac for now, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.
We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for existing ultrasn0w unlockers. After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.”
Please note before starting:
- Will NOT work on iPad 2 devices.
- Like all tethered Jailbreaks, it requires you to connect your device to a computer that runs Redsn0w
- (When the Untethered version comes out we will make a Tutorial for that also) but please note:
- When it does come out you will most likely have to restore your device in order to utilize it.
Complete Tutorial
Step 1 Download the Latest iTunes 10.5
Step 2 Next Make sure you have the latest version iOS 5 by also downloading it from iTunes on your Mac or PC.
Step 3 Download the new Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 for Mac (If you are windows users then you need to wait because it’s not out for windows yet)
Step 4 Click Jailbreak and then Install Cydia.
Step 5 Enter DFU mode by following onscreen instructions. (A lot easier than previous versions of Redsnow, this downloads all things from Apple automatically)
Step 6 Boot device into tethered Jailbroken state by entering DFU mode. Once inside click Extras and choose “Just Boot” (Redsnow will now reboot your device as tethered)
